Up and Up and Up

Food prices, I mean. And gas prices. And clothing prices.

It may be time to start putting some of that extreme frugality into practice. Things are not going to get better in the near future, so don't put off finding ways to get through this. The longer you wait, the more it's going to hurt.

Be diligent in watching out for sales and cooking from scratch. Stock up on basics when you see them begin to inch up in price because the next time you need them, they may have leaped up in prices.

And how many times have I said this: Grow as much of your own food as you can. Even if that means a tin can of dirt on your windowsill. You might be very glad to have some free lettuce when the price doubles again.

Don't think things will always be the same. There are rumors of global food shortages due to the weather, and pathogens growing in GM crops. GM has permeated almost every part of our food system.

I'm not trying to frighten anyone into a panic, but I'm trying to wake us all up. We need to be very alert to what is going on around us.

  3. Hi Pat, Since the high school here in Millersville, Pennsylvania removed the original surface of the track of clover and dirt and covered it over with rubber etc. the crows and bigger birds peck my garden to bits, mostly vegetables and some flowers. I don't have big cages and I live on 1/4 of a shoestring. I would at least like some tomatoes because I can't drive my car unless absolutely necessary.

  4. Have you tried tying things among your vegetables to scare the birds away? If you have string of any kind, you can make your own netting.

    Such is "progress." :(

  5. yes...everything is going up. The water included. I have a small area in which I plant. For where we live it is time to plant root veggies so I did that this weekend. Also they said in our local news that property taxes are going way up next year...I just don't know what they think! I am doing what I can and cutting as much as possible. I am trying to stock up on what I can can but it is hard....

  6. Don't feel bad. Last year I planted my garden and within two hours my plants were all gone! I couldn't understand it. Come to find out our chickens got into the garden! Now we have netting up and it has been a protection!

  7. I guess we can add taxes to the things that are going up!

My daughter and I were just reminiscing about our chickens this afternoon. Even when they eat the garden, they're fun. :)

  8. Chickens ARE fun and make the best pets! I have 18 chickens that roam my back yard and I haven't bought eggs in the past 5 years!!!! If you are looking to do some urban farming chickens are a great addition! They are VERY easy to care for!

  9. They don't allow chickens here unless you have a lot more land than I do (I think you need a quarter acre). I used to always have chickens when we lived in the country, though.

  10. I went to the store today to find deals but alas none to be had. You would think the week before Easter that there would be deal galore but nope! I am even forgoing my Eater ham this year and opting instead for Cornish Game Hens they are MUCH cheaper than ham and since there will only be three of us we each get one to ourselves!! Besides the hams are so small and the prices are sky high!

  11. Pat-I thought Colorado was friendly for urban farming and raising chickens in the backyard! Wow I was wrong! I do have to say however that I did see Greenly CO on Dog the Bounty Hunter when they were chasing down a fugitive. It looks a lot like where I live!
