A penny plus a penny plus a penny...

And soon you have a dime. Do that ten times and you have a dollar and do THAT ten times... it adds up.

Never think that an opportunity for savings is too minor to fool with. It adds up. Just like a little charge on that credit card, or a little splurge at the store... just a little. You know how that adds up.

Savings adds up the same way. It's the same math. 1 + 1 = 2. Every time.

I don't know why that's so hard for us to understand.

  1. Hi! I have a question for you...I almost always buy meat for my family when it is the last day to sell it at the grocery store and get it at a HUGE discount and then I cook it immediately. I freeze and store the cooked meat in packages convenient for meals. I use the heavy zip type bags but I HATE HATE HATE to throw them away after I use them only once. Do you think it is safe to wash them and use a litle bit of bleach and use them again? I worry about how much money I am saving if I keep throwing away those containers! What do you think?
    Thanks!
Oh, by the way, I can't wait to read all your older blogs! Saving money can be kind of like a game or contest, don't you think? It's like it's me against the grocery store! (or whatever store is currently my competition! I love it when I feel like I've won!)

  2. Beth, I wash ziploc bags and reuse them all the time, no matter what's been in them. If I can wash a plate or a pan clean enough to eat from again and again, why can't I wash a plastic bag clean enough?

I buy discounted meat when I can, too, and just toss it in the freezer. When it's defrosted, it's as good as the day I bought it.

Yes, saving money can be a fun game! :)

  3. Pat, I believe you CAN'T reuse a plastic bag if it's been used for meat. There's no way of getting it sanitary enough as plastic leaches.
I do reuse all my other freezer bags.

The same logic of 1+1=2 applies to returnable cans. In our state they have a .10 deposit. Most guys on dh's job sites throw them away and litter the job with them. Dh picks them up and brings them home. All those .10 equals $3-$6! Definitely worth it.

  4. Why can't you get them sanitary enough, Cinnamonhuskies? I do it all the time and I'm still alive. The only time I had food poisoning was when I ate commercial luncheon meat.

If I can wash a plastic bowl or container and use it over, I can wash a plastic bag and use it over.
