Frugal common sense

I read the post on Frugal Upstate blog about mending and I just have to throw in my two cents' worth. It's a shame that more people don't mend clothes and linens instead of throwing them out, but in this age of consumerism, we're expected to throw things out or give them away at the first sign of wear. If you believe the hype, you'll learn to think of wearing "old" things as beneath you. After all, don't you deserve better than that?

No. I don't care who you are, you don't "deserve" better. All money matters aside, nobody deserves to waste the resources of this planet to satisfy his/her own ego.

I'm not militant about the environment - I don't even think about it that often. You don't have to be a tree hugger to see that wastefulness is... well, it's selfish. There's no other way I can think of to say it.

Frugal living and simple living and conscious living have a lot in common. I'd like to think that the main thing they have in common is common sense. And I wonder why they still call it "common" sense, because it sure isn't very common.

  1. This is so true. I've been thinking a lot about reusing stuff lately from clothes to lots of other stuff. I know that even if I don't like it anymore there is another use for it besides throwing it out. I love all the wardrobe refashion stuff out there. It helps us to actually be greatful for what we have if we force ourselves to keep things instead of just getting something new all of the time.

  2. You're right. We do appreciate things a lot more if we don't run out and replace them on a whim.
